Costa Coffee uses drones to fly beverages to customers

All coffee chains aspire to offer a personal service these days – but Costa Coffee is taking it to the next level by flying beverages to its customers using specially adapted drones.

The Whitbread-owned chain, which operates more than 3,000 branches around the world, has successfully tested its drone delivery service in Dubai.

Following a survey that showed 82% of its UAE customers would like to receive drinks or beverages using the technology, the chain undertook a one-day trial of its ‘coffee-copter’ in its Jumeirah Beach Road drive thru store.

The refreshments were sent straight to customers using Costa’s specially engineered drone, with beach-goers receiving their beverage 15 minutes after placing their order by phone.

Shemaine Jones, head of marketing at Costa Coffee UAE, described drones as the “next frontier for instant delivery”.

“Our customers told us they’d love to have their favourite drinks dropped off by drones, so we’re super excited to have successfully tested this service, enabling beach-goers to enjoy ice cold beverages without leaving the comfort of their sunloungers,” she said.

The drone delivery was a trial carried out by the company, with no exact details available yet as to whether it plans to introduce the service or not.
