Data-driven risk assessment is one step closer to reality

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and other leading global authorities (such as Canada TCCA and Australia CASA) have adopted the Specific Operations Risk Assessment methodology developed by JARUS (Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems) WG-SRM as an Acceptable Means of Compliance for operators in the Specific Category. These operations typically take place beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), exceed the maximum height of 120 metres or use a drone whose maximum take-off weight (MTOM) is greater than 25 kg. The SORA methodology is used to determine the risk posed by a complex drone operation and determine acceptable mitigations.

One of the biggest challenges of the operator`s communities today is to quickly and efficiently develop a SORA assessment for their operations. Failure to do so results in rejections from Aviation Authorities with associated financial losses.

ANRA technologies’ new product, SmartSkies SORA software, helps developing an initial assessment for both Air and Ground Risk leveraging data available within the ANRA UTM platform (e.g. airspace classification, weather, NOTAMs, strategic conflicts, population and more) as well as the answers to a series of targeted questions posed to the drone operator during the mission planning phase. Once the initial risk assessment has been performed, the operator can modify several parameters resulting in a refined evaluation. The outcome of this process is the Specific Assurance and Integrity Level (SAIL) associated with the operation and a list of applicable Operational Safety Objectives (OSO). The SmartSkies SORA tool also assesses the required robustness level for each OSO and verifies if the operator is compliant or not.

“SmartSkies SORA builds upon ANRA’s legacy of delivering software solutions that enable complex, uncrewed aircraft operations. Combining SmartSkies SORA with our world-class UTM platform will assist the pilot in making better decisions,” stated Amit Ganjoo, Founder and CEO of ANRA Technologies.

The safety of drone operations is the primary focus for everyone in the business. This is true for the regulators and the general public, and drone operators and pilots. By implementing software like ANRA SmartSkies, SORA operators have significantly improved risk awareness and plan their missions safely and fully comply with aviation authority`s requirements.

When asked about the ANRA SmartSkies SORA tool, Lorenzo Murzilli, Leader of the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems Working Group SRM, said, “the SORA methodology has been developed to support drone operators and aviation authorities to assess operational risks and develop acceptable mitigations. The methodology has seen global adoption and is now ready for the next step, automating some of its key steps by using data available to UTM platforms. The ANRA SmartSkies SORA tool is a welcome step in this direction.”
