Drone Safe Register has appointed a new communications manager to help expand its national network of professional UAV operators and to promote the UAV industry to UK businesses.

Adrian Westwood will be central to this, calling on his some 20 years’ experience working in PR and communications for the likes of the Environment Agency, Crown Prosecution Service and Natural England.

He also worked with private companies in the energy, construction and environmental sectors.

Mark Boyt, CEO at DSR, commented: “Adrian is not only an experienced public relations and communications manager, he also holds his own CAA Permission for Commercial Operations and flies mapping, surveying and inspection missions through his Drone Reconnaissance Services and Kent Drone Surveys.

“He understands the media and the UAV industry and joins Drone Safe Register in readiness for the increase in commercial UAV activity we expect over the next two years and the subsequent demand for professionally-trained UAV pilots.”

Westwood added: “I became involved with UAVs earlier this year when I realised the industry was destined to become a game changer in the surveying, mapping, construction and inspection industries. The uptake of UAVs by UK businesses is still in its infancy compared to the USA and Japan. The industry needs to promote itself as a whole to potential large-scale adopters such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Facilities Management Association and the Institute of Civil Engineering, amongst others.”

Concluding: “Once UK industries and businesses recognise the financial and environmental benefits of using UAVs, then the demand for UAV pilots and operators, and post-flight data processors, will rise. Drone Safe Register intends to be at the forefront of this campaign and, thereby, attract more business for its members.”
