The US Air Force has confirmed that a US Reaper Drone shot down another unmanned aircraft for the first time ever last year.
According to a report by Military.com, the US MQ-9 reaper fired a missile to take out the unmanned aircraft.
The event has been described as the beginning of the unmanned aerial combat age.
In an interview with Military.com, colonel Julian Cheater said: “It was an MQ-9 versus a drone with a heat-seeking air-to-air missile, and it was direct hit during a test.”
He added: “We develop those tactics, techniques and procedures to make us survivable in those types of environments and, if we do this correctly, we can survive against some serious threats against normal air players out there.”
The Air Force frequently uses drones as targets to shoot at, but this is the first time one has been taken out autonomously.
