The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has declared a strict ‘no drone zone’ over Washington DC ahead of US president elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday.
Security in the capital has been beefed up amid concerns that armed protests could take place following the storming of the Capitol building by Donald Trump supporters earlier this month.
“Washington DC is a national defence airspace and drone flights are strictly prohibited,” said the FAA in a public notice.
The US regulator warned of severe penalties if people disobeyed the order.
“In the interest of national security, you may not fly your drone in or around the greater DC area,” the FAA tweeted.
“Illegal drone operations will face significant civil penalties and criminal prosecution.”
The FAA did not say when the drone ban will be lifted.
