Gwent Police turns to Evolve Dynamics for drone tech deployment

Gwent Police in South Wales has purchased Evolve Dynamics’ new Sky Mantis to aid its work.

It is expected to help the force with a number and wide range of work including public order events, accident investigation and rural crime.

The Sky Mantis, developed by the Evolve Dynamics team in Guildford, features two cameras, a 30x zoom in HD and a high-end thermal camera which gives visibility in dark conditions.

It is also weatherproof.

Speaking to Commercial Drone Professional, Mike Dewhirst (pictured third from left), founder at Evolve, commented: “Gwent purchased the Sky Mantis earlier this year and have been familiarising themselves with it over the past months.”

He continued: “They have been impressed with the extremely rapid deployment of the aircraft and so have a number of other forces who have seen it with them in action, including the RNLI during a river search.

“The all-weather capability has also been extremely helpful with Welsh weather being rainy and windy on a regular basis.”

The drone has been developed following feedback from emergency service providers and due to this, has an RC with joy-sticks and large buttons rather than a touch screen.

This is due to feedback which said how a lot of emergency service teams need to operate in gloves.

Dewhirst added: “The ability to utilise the drone and not having to call out a helicopter has saved the force in excess of £46,000 in just a few months. They were also really happy with the value for money that the aircraft gives them, considering similar features are usually in solutions costing X2 or X3 times of what Sky Mantis costs.
