Hackney Police first to roll out UAVs for manhunt missions in London

Hackney Police has become the first London police force to introduce UAVs to its manhunt operation as it gets city-wide operation underway.

The camera drone, which is on loan from Surrey Police, is set to be implemented in a search trial that is expected to last until November.

The service has begun the trial in a bid to explore an alternative option that can be called upon when helicopters are not available or practical.

A Hackney Police spokesman told the Hackney Gazette: “We were the first to meet the criteria for our missing person case. They weren’t found but it was very positive and able to clear a large open area a lot quicker than it would take multiple officers walking through on foot.

“It’s not used for surveillance, it’s for time-sensitive incidents where a helicopter would be deployed if available.”
