A recreational drone pilot has been given an award by Greater Manchester Police for his help in finding a missing 14-year-old girl.
The girl went missing near Manchester Ship Canal in August 2019 and Michael Hooper, who was flying his drone nearby, offered his help.
Aerial police units in the area were all occupied by other tasks at the time of the search.
With a description of the girl he set to work and soon found her behind some trees that had kept her hidden from police searching the area.
Hooper, 59, stayed with her until police arrived and she was safely returned to her parents after she went missing 15 hours prior.
He was subsequently awarded the Chief Constable’s Citizen’s Commendation, but expressed his embarrassment at the recognition: “It was just something that was done by reaction – something that anyone else would have done. I was just really glad to find the girl.”
