Rotterdam drone delivery paves way for autonomous unmanned freight and passenger transport

The Port of Rotterdam has become the location of the first drone-to-vessel delivery in the Netherlands.

The drone in question recently airlifted a parts consignment package to Allseas’ semi-submersible construction vessel Pioneering Spirit at the Port of Rotterdam.

The pilot project was set up by Dutch Drone Delta, Allseas and the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

It is part of a programme to make the workings of the port more efficient.

Those involved said that the development could even lead to autonomous freight and passenger transport in the not-so-distant future.

The next steps are to install more drone technology at the site, and to conduct similar flight tests with beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) technology.

Port authority advisor Ingrid Römers commented: “Utilising new technologies allows us to make our port smarter, more streamlined, more efficient and safer.

“The current pilot project is a prime example: it makes a significant contribution to more efficient transport in general.

“In due time, it will specifically help to reduce the pressure on our road network.”
