The USA’s largest online marketplace dedicated to refurbishing electronic products and appliances has begun offering certified refurbished drones on its site.
Back Market, which was launched four years ago, is now starting to expand its inventory of high quality goods beyond popular items such as smartphones and laptops to target the fast growing drone market.
It hopes to target commercial users that are looking for a more “affordable” solution and claims it has popular DJI models that it is offering for 37% less than a new version.
Since the change in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) drone regulations in 2015, sales of UAVs have been on the rise. BI Intelligence expects sales of drones to surpass $12 billion (£9.2 billion) in 2021, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6% from $8.5 billion (£6.5 billion) in 2016.
Thibaud Hug de Larauze, founder and CEO of Back Market, said: “Drones have reached a maturity level similar to mobile phones and computers that has resulted in a strong secondary market for refurbished models. Expanding into the refurbished drone market allows us to bring a more affordable option to hobbyists and professionals, but also gives consumers a reliable alternative to get ahead of the e-waste impact we will likely see as this market grows.”
The Back Market drones section features models from market leader DJI, including the DJI Mavic Pro which it claims can be purchased for a 37% lower price than a new model.
Other models include the DJI Phantom 4 Pro and DJI Inspire 2. DJI drones available at Back Market are refurbished by the manufacturer and offer a one-year warranty from the manufacturer as well, it said.
The company currently operates in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Belgium, and launched in the US in the beginning of the year.
It employs a team of about 100 employees across its three offices located in Paris, Bordeaux and New York.
