Terra Drone Indonesia and the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry have successfully demonstrated how UAVs can monitor electricity lines.

The demo was done using the Terra Wing drone at a PT PLN main transmission unit in East Java and Bali.

Within ten minutes, the drone was able to monitor 2km of electricity lines covering four transmission towers.

The results obtained through drone monitoring are in the form of a point cloud or 3D model of the power line, derived using a software system developed jointly by Terra Drone and CRIEPI.

This data can then be analysed to understand the distance between cables and to identify parts that have started to become loose.

The data also acts as an efficient vegetation management solution because potentially disruptive foliage surrounding the power lines can be easily identified in great detail and with high accuracy using drones.

Terra Drone has said that with more than 20 group companies already in its network, it is always looking out to collaborate with drone technology companies.
