Not a conventional technology company, but Cranfield University has been a progressive force in the industry with its work over the last year and it promises to continue that into 2019.

The institution is an exclusively-postgraduate university and offers UAV programmes that focus specifically on key verticals such as aerospace, defence, security, energy, environment, agrifood, management, manufacturing, transport systems and water.

As part of its drone work, Cranfield University has recently partnered with an EU-led project to test if the European Union is ready to deal with the imminent implementation and scale-up of drone operations.

The work will start in Greece shortly and last for a period of 18 months, meaning the university will have an important role to play in the way in which the EU handle drones going forward and possibly how airspace issues are managed after Brexit.
