Taxi hailing service Uber is exploring the idea of using drones within its Uber Eats food delivery division.
The company’s Elevate arm, which works to develop air-based applications for its services, is reportedly looking at seeing whether drones can enable faster food delivery.
Delivery partners around the world typically use bicycles, motorbikes and cars to get around but the use of drones could speed up the time it takes to get orders to customers.
News site BGR said that as well as the speed and efficiency gains, drone usage could be cheaper for the company in the long run.
Earlier this year Uber was named among a set of companies experimenting with drone delivery following the launch of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commercial drone pilot programme across the US.
The three-year pilot scheme, which is being trialled in 10 US states, also involves Apple and Microsoft.
