MissionGO and Nevada Donor Network have paired up to undertake the longest organ delivery flight in drone history.
MissionGO is a provider of unmanned aviation solutions while Nevada Donor Network is an organ procurement organisation serving the state of Nevada.
Together the pair have completed two successful test flights carrying a human organ and tissue via drone, which they hope will pave the way for future improvements to the efficiency and speed of organ delivery.
The flights, on 17 September, first saw research corneas transported from Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center to Dignity Health – St. Rose Dominican, San Martín Campus.
The second flight, meanwhile, which delivered a research kidney from an airport to a location outside of a small town in the Las Vegas desert, marked the longest organ delivery flight in UAS history.
Last year, MissionGO team members Anthony Pucciarella and Ryan Henderson, in their roles at the University of Maryland UAS Test Site and in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center, also delivered the first kidney by UAS that was then successfully transplanted into a patient.
